The History of Lancaster
The city of Lancaster became industrialized in the 1870s during the times of the Southern Pacific Railroad. Those traveling between San Francisco and Los Angeles could stop in Lancaster and admire the natural resources the city had to offer. When gold was found in the hills north of Lancaster, the city also started to boom. Today, you can still see the staked claims from the gold prospectors of the late 1890s.
The first airplanes were brought to the area in the 1930s and the United States Air Force conducted flights tests at Lancaster’s Muroc Air Base. Now known as the Edwards Air Force Base, the base hosted NASA space shuttle landings in the past and continues to conduct flight tests of the B-2 stealth bomber, the F117A stealth fighter, B-1b, the SR71 “Blackbird” and the U-2. Any aerospace aficionado should definitely check out the area to see the flight history through their own eyes.
September is a great month to visit the area because the Aerospace Walk of Honor tributes five test pilots who have made an influential impact on the aviation industry. Visitors can also meet the inductees. Book a Lancaster CA motel early to take advantage of all of the aerospace sights.
